Are Lexical Meaning and Context Sufficient for Determining Indexical Reference?

چکیده

David Kaplan’s ([Kaplan, 1989b], [Kaplan, 1989a]) philosophical work on indexicals has been influential not only with philosophers, but also with psychologists and linguists (e.g., Miller and Nunberg). Nevertheless, Kaplan’s account of indexicals has several problems. In this paper, I discuss his view that lexical meaning and context are sufficient for determining the reference of what he calls ”pure indexicals” (e.g., ’I,’ ’here,’ and ’now’). He developed this view in his ([Kaplan, 1989b]) early paper, ”Demonstratives,” and retained it in his ([Kaplan, 1989a]) later paper, ”Afterthoughts,” even though the later one contains a substantial change in his view of the role of demonstrations in determining reference.1 In the present paper, I propose to clarify what constitutes the purity of pure indexicals, and to argue that several factors, in addition to lexical meaning and context, are needed for determining indexical reference. I also clarify and criticize Kaplan’s account of demonstrations, and suggest an alternative account (from my [Roberts, 1993a]) of how demonstrations, descriptions, and context function in determining indexical reference. I will not take up Kaplan’s direct reference theory in this paper, because I ([Roberts, 1993b]) have discussed it elsewhere, and because it concerns the contribution of indexicals to propositions rather than the mechanisms by which they determine reference.

Meaning and Justification of Direction and Change of Direction in Perceptual Space

The paper presents a case study in the compositionality of particle-motionverbs. Part of the investigation is the interaction between indexical elements contributed by hin(there, thither) vs. her(here, hither) and the deictic motion verbs kommen (come) vs. gehen (go). The investigation will lead to a distinction between the notion indexical in the sense of ’direct reference to the utterance sit...

Reference and Indexicality

This thesis is a general defence of a context-dependent description theory of reference with special regards to indexical reference on the basis of a truth-conditional theory of meaning. It consists of two parts. In the first part, the roots of the Frege-Russell view are laid out and contrasted with various aspects of direct reference theory and the New Theory of Reference. Two description-base...

Neural Processing of What and Who Information during Spoken Language Processing

■ Human speech is composed of two types of information, related to content (lexical information, i.e., “what” is being said, e.g., words) and to the speaker (indexical information, i.e., “who” is talking, e.g., voices). The extent to which lexical versus indexical information is represented separately or integrally in the brain is unresolved. In the current experiment, we use short-term fMRI ad...

Perceptual Concepts : In Defence of the Indexical Model François

1. Indexicality in language and thought As expression types, indexicals do not refer. Only tokens of an indexical refer, because indexical reference is achieved through relations between tokens of the indexical and other entities in the context of tokening ; entities which gain their status as referent in virtue of standing in these relations to the relevant token. For example, a token of 'I' r...
